"I'll live with Norah in the middle of a field..."

Norah Bennet was one of the first female bus drivers in the Forest. Married in later life a family disagreement meant they had nowhere to live - until her employer came to their aid. Remembered here by James Bevan.

​As a young woman Rosa Taylor would catch the village bus. She began courting the driver and eventually they married - and won a ‘tax break’.
"Everyone used to say 'that's your sister'..."

It was common practice for children that were born outside of a marriage, orphaned or whose parents could not afford to raise them, to be brought up by their grandparents or other members of their family as their own children. Here Glenda Griffiths describes her long relationship with Auntie June, the revelation that she was her sister and their reconciliation to their sibling status late in life.

Glenda Griffiths' future husband proposed to her without asking the permission of her father. Tradition required a suitor to ask the father of the intended bride if they could be married. Here she describes how her father was offended and the proper etiquette was followed to ‘put things right’
